Meet Danica LeBlanc and Brandon Schatz, avid podcasters who love Doctor Who, sell comics and cultivate an inclusive, creative community around whatever they do.
Danica and Brandon were both guests and hosts at our first ever Edmonton podcasting meetup at their store, Variant Edition, which has become a hub for intelligent conversations about pop culture. Since they are podcasters extraordinaire, I interviewed them in front of a live audience at the meetup, and that’s what you’ll hear on this week’s episode.
Together they host two podcasts: Doctor Whooch, where they pour a cocktail or two and analyze Doctor Who; and Yegs & Bacon, the “fictional morning show” they host from the store to discuss that week’s comic book releases and pop culture issues. They also use that outlet to rebroadcast the audio from panel discussions and interviews.
Brandon co-hosts Podcast! the Comics, with James Leask, where they dive even deeper into comics, TV and the like. And Brandon has a blog called Submetropolitan, where he reflects on life, business and everything. So, there’s a lot going on, and we talk about how and why they do all of that in this conversation:
